Week 011 (Oct 6–Oct 12): Saying Hello to the Linux Kernel

✍ Week’s content, if you missed it

  • No new content last week 😔 — but lots of groundwork for what’s coming next!

🛠 This Week at the Workbench

  • Set up my new development environment for Linux and successfully built my first kernel module. It’s always a special moment when a simple “Hello, Kernel!” actually runs. More about this in Tuesday’s podcast episode.
  • Switching from microcontrollers to full Linux development feels like stepping into a much bigger world — the learning curve is steep, but incredibly rewarding.

💡 Things I Learned or Noticed

  • Recorded the new podcast episode and, for the first time, filmed myself while recording. I edited the video in Final Cut Pro — and wow, that tool can be a real patience test. Between failed renders and huge temp files, it’s not the smoothest workflow.
  • Continued studying operating system design with Modern Operating Systems by Tanenbaum and Bos — a perfect complement to my Linux deep dive. Even small concepts like process scheduling start to make more sense now.

📸 Snapshot of the Week

No photo this week — too much coding, not enough light!

🔗 Inspiration & Resources

  • Qualcomm Acquires Arduino- Big news: Qualcomm joins forces with Arduino and unveils the new Arduino UNO Q board.
  • Open Printer- An open-source, repairable ink-jet printer project. Love seeing hardware move in this direction.

🚀 What’s Next

Next week, I’ll dive into cross-compiling my first kernel module for the Raspberry Pi’s ARM architecture — taking the first real step toward embedded Linux development.
